"Hypoalbuminemai occurs in:
-Burns
-Septicaemia
-ARDS
-Acute Liver failure
-Acute nephrosis
-Protein losing enteropathy
Related to capillary leak from dysfunction of the endothelial barrier. Mechanism unknown.
Low albumin = reliable prognostic indicator.
However there is no evidence to support its use in critically ill patients.
